80's futuristic australian guy travels with device to record memories to share with blind parent

I remember he picks up someone in his travels, it's in the future although not very futuristic looking.  He has a device and he is recording things not a camera or audio recorder.  There is a scene where he is buying a car and the salesman won't take cash only credit.  There is a nav system in the car long time before nav systems were common and he drives off grid.

When he returns home he plays these recordings for his family but they get hooked on the device and begin recording their dreams and watching their dreams so in the end he puts them all in a cage and keeps the device away from them.  They're in sort of a desert.

I remember at one point the tape playing in the car had what sounded like tribal kids singing/chanting.
