Present day western

Saw this one a long, long time ago (1992-1993), probably from the late 80's or early 90's. Don't remember much, except that it involved a group of young friends going to a small, remote town. There is a gang of outlaws there. At the end the gang leader has a showdown with one of them, is defeated, fakes surrender and then tries to attack the guy as he walks away, only to be killed by another of the group of friends (one of the girls, I think). The movie has this western tone, but is in the present.

It sounds like "Purgatory" (1999), but that isn't set in the present-day West.

There is a movie in which a modern-day lawman ends up in a Western town:
"Ghost Town" (1988)
From IMDb:
Deputy Langley tracks a kidnapped girl to an abandoned ghost town. However, the town is not abandoned but haunted by the spirits of an outlaw, Devlin, and his gang, who hold the equally deceased townspeople hostage until the outlaws can be killed by a lawman.
