Film about a french girls convent based on a true story

Before french convents changed they were used as a type of prison for teenage girls. The movie i want to find is about two girls who become friends in the convent. One of them had to give up her baby and it's the story of how she, with the help of her friend, look for this baby. In one part of the film another girls gets pushed down the stairs by one the nuns and dies. Another, also has to give up her baby and spends endless hours crying. The two main characters are kind of rebelious. When they try to escape their at the theater and they're helped by an actress wearing a red coat.  At the end of the film you see the friend of the girl talking to the baby that they had been lookin for as an old women as if she were retelling the story of who her mother was.
