70s - 80s - horror / thriller - man breaks in and kills woman and her daughters with an axe

70s - early 80's horror / thriller set in america in perhaps the 19th or very early 20th century.

I can only remember a couple of scenes from this as a kid, one in particular. A man in his 30s - 40s tries to gain entry into a house where a woman and her daughters are living. At the door, he tries to talk his way in, but it went sour and the mother tries to grab an old shotgun by the door. He then quickly attacks her with an axe.

Soon after, his brother(?) accomplice (?) runs in as well and into the room with 2 or 3 daughters, and they all start screaming. next scene is the 2 about to leave, and as they leave, one of the guys attacks the almost dead mother laying on the floor with the axe again. I have a feeling this is a story about some insane criminals, rather than anything paranormal. Those 2 are prominant throughout the movie, so maybe its about them exclusively.

Thanks in advance
