Old black and white film about German pilot that escapes prison camp.

I saw it on TV many years ago, and would love to watch it again. It is a black and white film, so maybe made in the 50s or earlier. It's about a German soldier, maybe a pilot that is captured by Allies and taken to a prison camp, not sure which country, and his quest to gain freedom.

Near the end he walks hundreds of miles in the snow dragging a canoe and finally comes across a house.

If anyone knows the movie, id love to know the name.

Ca. at the 1:37:00 mark starts the scene where the German pilot, escaped from an Allied POW camp, attempts to cross an icy river in a stolen canoe or small boat.
