searching for a horror/thriller movie about a human figure/shape crawling up a wall

A long time ago (like 10 years ago or so) i saw a movie with my mother and i can't by the life of me remember the name of the movie or find it on the internet. The only things i remember about the movie are that in a part of the movie you see a black mold/fungus like substance form on a wall in the movie which at first seems like a normal stain. The owners of the house decide to paint over it, as the movie progresses the stain keeps returning and seems to develop a shape. First a hand, then an arm with a hand and the further the stain develops it seems to be a human shape crawling up the wall. My mom says that thing kills people too, but i can't really remember that, so don't take that to much into account.
Please somebody know the name of this movie, because i've been looking on and off for 6 years.

I have a feeling that's "Dark Water" the time frame suggests it's the original japanese version:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0308379/?ref_=fn_al_tt_2
but it could also be the American remake:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0382628/?ref_=sr_1
seen both and i like them. But they're not the one i'm looking for
I'm so glad I've finally found a post about this movie!
I've also been searching on and off for almost 9 years now, it's creepy how so few people know even roughly what film I'm talking about.
I've searched movie archives from 1980-89 and it just doesn't seem to exist!
I remember watching it, maybe 1999 on TV with my mum. Even she can't name it, although remembers watching it with me.
A family move into a house and notice a large black stain on the kitchen wall. As you mentioned, they try many times to paint over it, only to find it had returned, and larger than before.
I really don't remember much else about it.
If anyone sees this and has even a faint idea of what it could be, please comment!
I FOUND IT LOL I saw it as a kid and got too scared to finish it but I remember all the things you guys are talking about. It's called  13 Gantry Row
Looks scary, worth a watch, but not the one I'm looking for. Not sure about original poster? Weird, cause it's exactly as described, just not quite right :/ thanks a million for your input!
Thank you very much for this title. It happens to be the movie I have been looking for, for about 7 years now. Also watched it as a kid and it stayed with me.

This is likely too recent, and there are other phenomena throughout the house. But, I'll give it a try:

"The Messengers" (2007)
From IMDb:
It's been six years since the Rollins family left their farm, and now the troubled Solomon family has come from Chicago to rebuild their lives following their son's hospitalization due to their daughter's drunk driving accident. As they start to settle in, something odd and strange begins to occur to their son. Could something supernatural be at work, and did the previous family just leave, or are they still here?

The persistent stain is on the parents' bedroom wall as far as I recall. Even when it's painted over, it shows up again. Shadowy figures keep showing up, sometimes violently.

At least it's another film to rule out.

Omg!!! I've been looking for that movie too!! It's really old, probably 1980-1990s. I only remember that part of the movie. Over days, the fungus like (greenish-black) keeps crawling up the wall and turns out to be a human embedded inside the wall and tries to get out. I think it's not American, probably British, but I'm not sure. It's definitely not dark water, the grudge or the messenger. It's way older. Please!!! Someone tell me its name!!
I found it!!!! The Haunted 1991!! Check a clip on youtube to confirm, make sure the year is in the search bar too. I'm so freaking happy i could cry!! I posted on another site asking and a kind stranger replied! I had to pass on the joy! I'm so happy right now!!
Sadly that is not the movie we are looking for, thank you for trying to help anyway.
gigagamer16, is one of the other two above answers (The Grudge; The Messengers) the movie you are looking for? Please, give us a feedback. Thanks!
No problem. Weird thing is, after i watched it, i'm not sure thats what i was looking for either :/ the stain was definately more human shaped, and spread over a period of days. I will keep looking, hopefully we get our answer soon!!
