movie from mid late 70's or from the 80's about a dying girl

In this movie there is a single mom whose daughter is dying. the girl is either dying from cancer/lukemia. or a brain tumor as she always ends up screaming and crying from severe pain in her head. the mother helps her daughter to be in a ballet (the nutcracker, i think) before the girl finally dies on a new york subway.
