A girl who played the piano very well, suddenly decided to give up the piano, and when she started again she lost the competition

I think it's before 2005, colour, might be American?

Part of the story: A girl who played the piano very well and had won a lot of competitions, and one day for some reasons she suddenly told her mother that she wouldn't play piano any more. Her mother agreed. After some time she changed her idea and told her mother again. Her mother just coldly said that she would not be able to play piano as well as before (or sth similar?). And the girl lost the competition (to a boy who always lost to her before? I'm not sure).

Thanks in advance!
