1980~2008 = 2D animated movie about the protagonists against an organization searching for pieces of a fragmented magic stone/rune

It's 2D animated, I believe the protagonist is a little girl and a samurai (not sure, may be messing things), but certanly there is somewhat of a "pet" for the good guys, he is a little lion/tiger. The bad guys find some or all of the magic fragmented stone/rune (the full shape of that stone is like the game genius, I believe the cover of the DVD had that rune in the center and the title, in dark colours), but in the end good guys retrieve the pieces and the little lion/tiger eats all of it, becoming a large lion and gaining the ability to speak and something else (each rune has its own particular power attached to it).

Probably not the one you are looking for, but it has a lion and the search for a special stone.
Is this the same movie you are talking about? I never did figure it out for the poster, but at least there is some more info to go on....
