70s sci fi animation - with flying whale monsters

An animated film/short film about an alien race and flying whale monsters that live in the sky above them.  When one character dies, they go into a trance and walk like a zombie.  Everyone else looks away in a sign of respect for the dying/dead.  They keep walking until they get to a giant hole in the ground.  They fall down the hole and transform into one of the whale monsters

Any ideas?  I'm sure I didn't dream it!
