Name of a movie about a novelist who always includes three black dogs in her stories.

Hello. I need someone to name a movie for me, it is one i haven´t watched. I know what the movie is about because a teacher i had in High School told us about it during class. She said, the movie is about a female novelist who always include Three black dogs (or three black something) in her stories, because of something of the past. When the movie advances, someone, a familiar or a detective im not sure, finds out that the thing was that she and her family had been raped/assaulted by three robbers/rapists (im not sure about the rape part, just about that it was a violent event) a long time ago, during her childhood. It was something like three men broke into her house when she was a kid and assaulted/attacked/killed her family. She never told anyone, i think, but she converted the violent episode into the three black characters (dogs, i think) that always appear in the novels she writes as an adult.

Sorry if it is not clear, english is not my native language. Thank you very much!
