Movie about 2 young boys in orphanage (I think) who fight in chicken shed

So it mightn't be an orphanage but it's definitely some home for boys. The main boy starts to fight with this new more rebellious boy in a chicken shed, practising boxing. There is a teacher who has an impact on the protagonist in particular. When someone knocks over a basket of eggs, the protagonist gets in trouble. He lies to this teacher, who tells him a story about what his teacher had done to him what he told 'white lies' or 'black lies', which was cut off the tip of his tongue. Instead of doing this to the protagonist, the teacher makes the boy give the teacher a few lashes of a ruler on the teacher's hand, which upsets the boy more than he would have been if he just got the lashes himself. The song Amazing Grace features in the movie. And around the end of the movie it's near Christmas time and there's lots of snow. Something tragic may happen to the boy's friend, I don't remember. I think they all make toys for a charity at Christmas time.
