Help, my mother not knowing is driving me mad lol

I have tried searching online and so has my mother but no success whatsoever so I'm hoping you film geniuses can help as its topic of convo daily haha all she remembers is that it was about two police men who were work partners and one of them had kids but he got killed so his work partner took in and brought his kids up. Its an old film. And I'm sorry but that is all the info she has given me, I know it doesn't make things easy so not expecting a response, but had to exhaust all options.

Have a great day.
