Thriller movie from the 80s or the early 90s with a finger cutted found in a paint pot

Hello! I can barelly recall the movie, I was pretty young when I saw it but the plotwist at the end is still tormenting me.

This movie is about a private detective's investigation about the murder/suicide of a painter. There is few scenes I can recall, there is something about a finger cutted that is found in a paint pot in the house of a woman who was accused of murder and this is the evidence that will make her go to jail. At the end you understand that the guy who was investigating was on fact the murderer and he putted the finger in the woman's house to charge her of the crime.

I don't know why but I'm 80% sure that the leading role played by Jeff Goldblum or someone who's looking exactly like him.
