90's or 2000's- Her parents die of double suicide bc the mom is sick. She later tries to kill herself and her son.

The main character has a rough upbringing because her parents loved each other more than they loved her. Hence the double suicide when the mom is dying. She takes advice from a weird neighbor that dresses in all black. She has sex with lots of random men who posses good qualities because she wants to get pregnant so she has someone to love her unconditionally. Everything is great until the child is  school aged and can't be with her all the time. I think they try to take him away from her when she won't send him to school and she tries to kill them both by running the car in a closed garage. I think the main character had blonde hair but obviously I can't remember any actors. Help me out!

"Emily tells her son Paul, now six years old, the story of his life - how she sought motherhood, to be a mom without a husband, to raise a perfect, exceptional child, whom she calls Loverboy. In flashbacks told around a pretend car trip they take - so he can practice driving - we see Paul's infancy, their fun together (sometimes with a manic edge), and his growing desire to go to school and be with other kids. We also flash back to Emily's childhood, with parents so bound up with each other that she's virtually ignored. Is Emily going to be able to let Paul be with others? Or, can she, as in the David Bowie song she sings at a school talent show, construct a life on Mars?"
