Boy looking for his father, who is a ghost

Date: Seen it approx. 10 years ago, probably not older than 20 years.

Genre: I guess comedy or adventure.

Country of origin: Unknown, predominantly caucasian actors.

It might be set in the Middle Ages. The clothes didn't look contemporary.

A living boy, maybe 12 years old, is looking for his deceased father, among ghosts with help from friendly ghosts.

There is a structure, maybe a house, where the ghosts live, it's small in the physical world but when the kids magically enters it during his search, it it is shown to have a large interior. In this structure there is a machine (?) which can tell the whereabouts of a ghost, if presented with an extremity (?) of the deceased. The boy gives it a toy, maybe a small wooden horse, his father made for him.

The machine can't find the father, it says he was too good a person in life.

There is a scene when a ghost possesses a man and he tries to oust it with a fork. It doesn't work. He consumes something spicy and that does the trick.
