Investigation movie about secret environmental pollution

Date: 1975-1995.
County of origin: Unknown, probably the U.S, it was aired in Hungarian television with Hungarian dubbing.

It starts with two small boys playing (maybe association football) on a field until the ball falls into a pit. One of them either climbs or falls into it. He can't get out and the other one goes for help. As he is running away it's audible that the other boy in the pit is yelling that the air down there is hard to breathe. By the time the boy gets back with adult help the area is already crawling with people (cops, corporate types) and they say that the boy died of his injuries but they don't allow them to see the corpse. The other boy keeps saying that his playmate didn't sustain much injury while getting down to the pit.
Than the story jump ahead a number of years.
There is some kind of an investigation going on, there is an audio cassette that secretly recorded some key conversation. The guy who made it dies, but before that, he hides the cassette somewhere. Maybe a girl with her fiancé finds it, during their vacation (?) and they continue the investigation.
At the end it's revealed that a big corporation illegally dumped something toxic where the boys were playing at the beginning and the kid died because of the poisonous fumes.
The investigation part is not just papers and legal stuff, there is action, suspense and chases.
There is an environmental message at the end of the movie saying something along the lines of: this story didn't really happen, but we should protect our environment.

"The Last Song" (1980) (TV movie)

From IMDb:
"A man accidentally discovers a plot to cover-up a fatal toxic waste accident, and is brutally murdered. His wife an aspiring singer who unwittingly comes into possession of several tapes for which her engineer husband and his partner in the electronic eavesdropping business were murderd, and discovers that she and her daughter are now being stalked by the killers."

Here you can watch the movie on Youtube:

At ca. 0:00:54 you can see the two kids playing with a baseball, the ball falls into the pit, one of the kids climbs down into the pit, the other one goes to seek some help.

I am sure that this is the movie you are looking for. If you agree, then please select my answer as Best Answer.
