80s action movie, plays in the desert, people play a game trying to go pro to live underground in the city

The movie plays in a post-apocalyptic world.
There is a game with 3 people on each side, similar to football but trying to place an animal's skull somewhere. The 3 players have different weaponry like gladiators.
The oldest one loses his eye in one game.
They try to win matches so they can try out to play underground, in a city, where life is better than on the surface.
In the end they actually make it and one of them gets selected for the league.
The old guy, who loses the eye used to be a professional player but got kicked out for some reason, which is why he had to play on the surface.
I watched this as a child some 20 years ago, so I suppose it must be from the early to mid 80s

This one sounds like The Blood Of Heroes with Rutger Hauer and Joan Chen.
