french 1700 era movie

it's a movie about a french young girl in the 1700 and I think she's promised to marry an older man (i'm not sure) and she's comes to his house and kneels in front of him. They don't like each other very much and i believe she's has an affair either   with a friend or a man that works on the pallace. And that's all I can remenber.

Thank you.
