70s thriller

6 soldiers are traveling through a jungle in Vietnam. A couple of them die in the jungle. They were escaped and that is why they're in the jungle. They eventually end up in a village but the people are quite odd. Then they spread out and one comes in a crowded bar.

Can you remember anything about why the villagers were odd?
This might possibly be Southern Comfort from 1981

Except it's not Vitnam, it's Louisiana!  The soldiers are on a training exercise. The thing that makes me think it is this movie is the eerie feeling of the villagers - they are weird, and shady, like you say, and there is a scene where two of the soldiers crash a party/wedding celebration. The villagers are real hick hillbilly types. It's a long shot , but you should check it out - it's a cracking movie anyway - you can't lose!
