Kung Fu movie about asian man who wants to learn from temple but gets humiliated by instructor, then taught by old man by river.

I saw this movie around 1999 or 2000. It started out with a young man going to a temple(shaolin or buddhist, I don't really know) to learn from the monks. The teacher proceeds to beat him up and humiliates him in front of his students and kicks the young man out. The young man meets an old man who teaches him kung fu, and everyday the young man goes back to the temple to fight with the teacher again until he finally beats him. This movie stuck out because it actually seemed like the main character was learning as the filming went on. He gets faster and faster until he is lightning fast and fights with the schools headmaster. That's all I can really remember, hope its enough for someone to recognize it. Thank you all in advance!!
