young white girl befriends black man (family?) and protects him (them?)

She becomes teenager or young woman and defies her father to protect this man (and possibly his family) from men who want to take/hurt him. She is in a house or shack with them and the other people are outside; she is arguing or bargaining for his safety. Similar to Sounder or Where the Red Fern Grows.
