What was this one movie where a mother tries to murder/suicide her son in a car at the end but he survives?

The movie starts off following the mother when she was younger and she was desperately trying to get pregnant so she kept having sex with any man she could find as she traveled around the country. She was kind of unstable and protective of him after he was born. The movie follows his point of view for the rest of it. I don't remember a lot of what happens in the middle but the end scene is where she tries to kill herself and her son by piping the exhaust into her car, but police show up just in time to save the son but the mother dies.

I thought this was "Running With Scissors" at first but it isn't, since you see the mother and father together in that one in the trailer.
